Thoughts on Youth Ministry

My name is Brian Nicks and I am the Youth Dude at Faith Bible Church. This is a brand new adventure for me: blogging, not youth ministry. I never thought that I would be a blogger, and yet here I am. Call me “oldschool” I guess. I don’t Tweet, Tangle, IM, Text, or Video Chat, nor do I have a FaceBook or My Space account, and can barely use a cell phone, let alone an i-Phone. I’m all about face time and the lost art of the conversation. I read books, lots of books, and real books, not on a Kindle or any other electronic device. You have probably noticed a recurring theme in these opening sentences: I am not a “techno geek,” but I love ministering to students in junior high, senior high, and college, so I guess I am going to need to become proficient in a few things over the next few years. This is going to be a long and arduous process for me, but hopefully it will bear much fruit. There are a lot of hurting students out there that need the kind of love that only Jesus can provide. They look but don’t find because they don’t know where to find good, solid, Biblical answers. That is where this blog comes in. Over the many days, weeks, and months to come, I hope to use this tool to point students to the glory of the cross, to the Jesus who saves sinners from their sins and presents them cleansed to the Father. This is the Jesus I know, serve, and love. My desire is to become more involved in the lives of students through discipleship. This is where Biblical theology meets real life, this is what Jesus modeled for us in the Gospel narratives, this is what He has commanded all of us to go and do: Make Disciples! This takes time and effort. Look at how long Jesus was with His 12 hand picked men, and yet they still did not seem to get the picture even after His death, burial, and resurrection, but He never gave up on them, He loved them to the end (John 13:1). Even with my ultra-busy schedule (working full-time as a physical therapist and teaching a Bible Institute class on Monday nights) I desire to make myself available for these students in order to disciple them and present them complete in Christ (Col 1:28). Sunday mornings are for the believer to glorify God through worship in singing, prayer, and the teaching of the Word. We will be in the Word every time we meet for Sunday school and for Bible study. I am excited about Sunday mornings, we are going to be doing an Old Testament Survey, spending time in every book of the Old Testament and learning about why they are so important to our overall understanding of Scripture, who God is, and why Christ had to come and die for sins. On Wednesday evenings we will be doing more New Testament studies, whether topical or book. We are finishing a 5-week study of the parables in Luke 15 with an emphasis on the parable of the lost son. Our next series is going to be on the topic of “Worldliness” for about 6-weeks and then on to a look at the Life of Christ from a harmonization of all four Gospel writers. I am excited about having a winter retreat, possibly in Death Valley of all places in February, and then hopefully to the beach next Summer for our Summer retreat. Youth ministry is where the next generation of leaders for the church can be found. I am going to do all I can to make sure that they are ready to take the reigns and lead the church toward the glory of God for many years to come. How about you?
Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Did I mention that I also love to surf! Today was a rad dawnpatrol session at Staircase for about 3 hours with “the crew.” We had a great time. If anyone ever wants to join us, just let me know (you missed out George!).
