Theme: A study of three of God’s names that reveal His nature & character to help us see Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, & follow Him more nearly.
1. Elohim
Genesis 1:26 (NASB)
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
2. Adonal
Genesis 15:2 (NASB)
2 Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3. YHWH
Exodus 6:2-3 (NASB)
2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, Lord, I did not make Myself known to them
Acts 20:17-38 (NASB) 17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them,
“You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.
25 “And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 26 Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27 For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. 28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. 35 In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
36 When he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And they began to weep aloud and embraced Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, 38 grieving especially over the word which he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they were accompanying him to the ship.
Ephesians 5 (NASB) 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
3 But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Propositional Statement: In Ephesians 5:1-5, Paul gives us five helpful steps so that we can walk in a manner worthy of our calling.
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.” 9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Theme: Four aspects of Christ’s gifts to the church to understand so you will commit yourself to its growth.
I. The gifts Christ gave – vv. 7-11
Four observations
The prerequisite for the gifts is grace – v. 7
The gifts were given when He ascended on high – v. 8a
The gifts were given to men – v. 8b
The gifts He has given are people in office – v. 11
II. The immediate purpose of the gifts – v. 12
The Equipping of the saints for the work of service
III. The ultimate purpose of the gifts – vv. 12b-13
Three elements to attain to:
The unity of the faith and knowledge of God’s son – v. 13a
A mature man – v. 13b
The measure of the stature belonging to Christ – v 13c
IV. The resule of the gifts – vv. 14-16
Three results
We are no longer to be spiritual children – v. 14
We are able to grow in Christ (which we do as we speak the truth in love) – v. 15
We are able to contribute to the growth of the body – v. 16
Introduction
Background
I. Your Christian walk is a priority for unity – vv. 1-2
II. Your Christian devotion must be to preserve unity – v. 3
III. Your Christian doctrine is the precondition for unity – vv. 4-6
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
The first four points (vv. 1-4) were covered last week.
Introduction
Theme: Five features of the gospel to understand so you will rest in the assurance of your salvation
I. Understand the condemnation you deserve in Adam v. 1a (5:16, 18)
II. Understand the conquest that is yours in Christ – vv. 1b-2
III. Understand the cost God paid for you – v. 3
IV. Understand the consequence for all of us in Christ – v. 4
V. Understand the contrast between those in the Spirit and those in the flesh – vv. 5‑8
A. Their mind set – v. 5
B. Their outcome – v. 6
C. Their disposition toward God – v. 7
D. Their life purpose – v. 8

The last point and verses 5-8 will be covered in next month’s sermon
1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Theme: Four reasons why the true Christmas season never ends for Christians, so that you keep on celebrating all year long.
I. His salvation never ends (Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31; 2:11)
II. His priesthood never ends (Matthew 2:6)
III. His kingdom never ends (Luke 1:32-33)
IV. His worship never ends (Matthew 2:2, 11)
Jonathon Edwards: “The happiness of the creature consists in rejoicing in God, by which also God is magnified and exalted.”
C.S. Lewis:“I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation.”
Charles Spurgeon:“Praise is the rehearsal of our eternal song. By grace we learn to sing, and in glory we continue to sing. What will some of you do when you get to heaven, if you go on grumbling all the way? Do not hope to get to heaven in that style. But now begin to bless the name of the Lord.”
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:46-49 (NASB)
46 And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 “For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. 49 “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.
Matthew 1:2,24 (NASB)
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
Theme: Three qualities necessary to be spiritually prepared for Christmas so your celebration will please the Lord.
I. Submission to the Lord(Luke 1:38)
A. Direct Submission
B. Indirect Submission
Reasons for not submitting to God?
1. Not genuinely saved.
2. Not growing in sanctification.
3. Not viewing your submission as to God but to man.
II. Worship of the Lord(Luke 1:46-49)
A. Internal Attitude
Three obstacles to an attitude of worship
1. Undesirable Circumstances
2. Worldly Pursuits
3. Ungodly Influences
